Living Stones: Embracing Possibility
Celebrating the community that nurtures dignity, pride, and purpose
“He tends His flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in His arms and carries them close to His heart; He gently leads those that have young.” — Isaiah 40:11
On Sunday, we attended the opening of “Embracing Possibility: Georgia’s Disability Justice Journey” at the Tubman Museum. The exhibit is powerful in its own right—but what made the day especially meaningful was seeing several of our neighbors stepping into leadership as volunteer guides, helping tell the story of Georgia’s journey toward justice and inclusion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The room was filled with people from across the state—self-advocates, family members, professionals, and leaders—all gathered around a common purpose: to affirm the dignity and worth of people with disabilities, and to ensure they are supported, respected, and fully included in our communities.
The energy in the room was contagious. You could feel the momentum. Hope. Determination. Pride.
I was especially proud of our neighbors—those who will guide visitors through the exhibit, sharing their stories, and helping change perceptions just by showing up as themselves. It was a moment of visibility, advocacy, and belonging. It reminded me that nurturing is not just about care—it’s about opportunity. It’s about inviting people into purpose and empowering them to lead.
I’m also deeply thankful for our Vice President, LuAnn, who continues to build connections like this and push us toward excellence. Her vision and tenacity have opened doors for our neighbors to be seen and celebrated in new ways. And, of course, none of this would be possible without our incredible Direct Support Professionals, who do the daily work of nurturing—patiently, consistently, and with deep love.
Sunday’s event was a picture of Isaiah 40:11 in action: people being gathered, carried, and gently led—not only by one another, but by a God who delights in every person and calls us to do the same.
Reflection Question:
How can we nurture not just through care, but by creating opportunities for others to lead, shine, and share their gifts?
Closing Prayer:
Thank You for moments like Sunday—for glimpses of what’s possible when we come together in love and purpose. Thank You for our neighbors, who remind us every day of the beauty in every life. Strengthen those who lead, support those who serve, and teach us to nurture in ways that lift others toward their calling.
Amen.
If you haven’t seen the exhibit yet, we encourage you to visit Embracing Possibility: Georgia’s Disability Justice Journey at the Tubman Museum. It’s a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much we can accomplish when we walk the journey together.
